RESEARCH LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Chicago, IL

Chement is seeking a Laboratory Technician who is passionate about developing technologies that enable greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Currently, the production of cement accounts for 8% of global emissions each year making it one of the largest single sources of emissions, and one of the biggest hurdles towards the emissions reduction needed by 2050 to avoid a total climate disaster. Inspired by leading lithium-ion battery technology research and powered by renewable electricity, Chement is reinventing the 200-year-old way of making cement and will not stop until the billions of tons of CO2 emitted by the cement industry each year are history. 

We are a venture-backed startup with funding from both the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program, a Bill Gates funded organization, and Starlight VC. In our search for our next employees, we are looking for someone who is ambitious, contributes independent thought, and is willing to play an active role in fulfilling Chement’s mission to use clean, renewable electricity to change the cement industry.

This job is based in Chicago, Illinois.  All applicants must be willing to work five days a week, in-person.  

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fabricate, assemble, and test electrochemical cells using Li-ion battery manufacturing techniques

  • Perform basic wet lab chemical tests

  • Collaborate with CEO to design and implement novel experiments to advance Chement’s cutting-edge electrochemical processes

  • Work closely with an external partner, Aionics, to incorporate machine learning guided device and materials optimization into electrochemical experiments

  • Collaborate with CEO to source materials and supplies including iteration and optimize of workflow process, materials, supplies over time.

  • Work and inform technician to design/fabricate customized equipment on an as-needed basis.

  • On-site operations, including waste management. Responsible for oversight and proper disposal of chemicals and solvents on-site.

  • Support grant-writing, funding requests and technical reporting to existing funders.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field

  • 3+ years of previous experimental research experience in academic and/or industry setting

  • Strong understanding of electrochemistry and electrochemical systems

  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Eligible to work in the United States

IDEAL CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience with battery or other electrochemical storage/conversion technology research, and/or fabrication

  • Knowledge of Python programming and data manipulation

  • Experience with advanced spectroscopic characterization such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDX), and/or electron microscopy.

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field

CEMENT TESTING TECHNICIAN

Chicago, IL

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mix and test cement pastes

  • Perform basic wet lab chemical tests

  • Collaborate with CEO and researcher team to implement novel experiments to test and advance Chement’s cutting-edge cement production processes

  • Assist in data collection, processing, and analysis

  • Support technical reporting to existing funders

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • School degree or Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineer or related field

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel. Powerpoint

  • Must be organized and capable of keeping good, clear records in lab notebooks

  • Strong data entry, analysis, and visualization skills

  • Must be comfortable working in a team environment

  • Eligible to work in the United States

  • Previous experience with cement, concrete, or other construction materials

  • Knowledge of Python programming and data manipulation
